Artificial sweeteners also known as non-nutritive sweeteners are incredibly sweet molecules that have zero calories.  You thought sugar was sweet? Artificial sweeteners are 200–20,000 times sweeter! Today, six artificial synthetic sweeteners are approved by the FDA: aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, acesulfame potassium, neotame, and advantame. Two natural sweeteners, lou han guo (monk) fruit extract and stevia have also been approved. These sweeteners are found in many different types of food and especially beverages. These drinks are usually similarly priced to corresponding sugar drinks, which probably adds to their popularity.
