In 10 seconds? FLASH radiotherapy is a promising area of research to make cancer radiotherapy safer and more effective. Cancer researchers are working hard to make this vision a reality.

Can you remind me what radiotherapy is? Absolutely! Radiotherapy (the types of radiotherapy currently available to patients) is a mode of cancer treatment that uses high-energy beams to zap and kill cancer cells. But since high-energy beams can’t discriminate between cancerous and healthy tissues, researchers have learned that there is a small range of radiation doses that will successfully kill cancer while largely sparing healthy tissue.  As a consequence, most of the advancements in radiotherapy have come from technologies that help target the radiotherapy beams directly to the tumor area.
